Guidelines for safe behaviour on the Internet

1) Protect your personal data on the Internet

  • Keep the spam filter turned on
  • Be suspicious of unsolicited advertising campaigns and offers
  • Be vigilant if you do not know the sender
  • Trusted websites and online payment providers will never ask you to confirm confidential information, such as passwords or account details
  • Remove spam (as it may contain viruses or be used for phishing) and never open suspicious attachments

2) Phishing

Fraudulent e‑mail can also appear as e‑mail from a trusted source. Listed below is an overview of warning signs that will help you detect phishing:

  • E-mail from a free email address and not from a corporate e‑mail address
  • The e‑mail begins with a general greeting
  • Contains a threat (information that your account is insecure or may be shut down)
  • Requires personal information (username, password or bank details)
  • Contains a link to a website with a web address that is different from the official address of the sender's organization

 3) Browse the Internet safely

  • Check the URL in your browser's address bar for any spelling mistakes or unexpected names
  • Be suspicious if the website does not provide any contact information
  • Before entering personal or financial data, make sure you are on a secure page and the URL contains https:// and not just http://

4) Take the necessary precautions

  • If you have a wireless network, make sure it is encrypted
  • Block pop-ups in the browser or use different browsers
  • Only open attachments if a trusted person sends them
  • Create "strong passwords" that are at least eight characters long and contain a mixture of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and punctuation marks or symbols. Avoid mistakes and do not simplify the process of creating passwords
  • Keep your passwords secret and do not share them with anyone

5) Update the following tools regularly

  • Firewall
  • Anti-virus software
  • OS Update (for security patches and bug fixes)
  • Anti-spyware tools
